PIKES
Photo and Image Interpretation Keys Expert System
PIKES is an advanced image interpretation system developed in Partnership
with the Major Projects Office of the Canada Centre for Remote Sensing.
PIKES provides the photo-interpreter a sophisticated toolbox and a Case
Based Reasoning engine, hosted on affordable PC based technology. The
benefits of PIKES include increased accuracy and repeatability of
interpretation.
PIKES provides the photo-interpreter complete control over the interpretation
process. PIKES includes an Interpreter's Assistant, based on a Case Based
Reasoning expert system, which can provide suggestions to the interpreter
on partially completed interpretations. The Interpreter's Assistant
incorporates a database of previous interpretations including the
corresponding photographic/image keys and other biophysical parameters for
the land cover types of interest. Based on a partially completed
interpretation (e.g. tone, texture, aspect, etc.), the Interpreter's
Assistant uses advanced artificial intelligence techniques to query the
database and provide the most likely interpretations of the land cover to
the interpreter. The interpreter can display the associated photo-keys of
the suggested interpretations prior to making a final choice of the land
cover type. To further aid the interpretation process, PIKES includes a
hypertext based tutorial on photo-interpretation, based on a model used
by the BCMOF (British Columbia Ministry of Forests).
Initially designed for forest inventory applications in British Columbia,
PIKES's flexible design allows the system to be tailored for the photo-
interpretation of other land cover types (e.g. agriculture). The PIKES
database can be loaded with the applicable keys and other parameters
associated with the required application.
PIKES is hosted on a PC, running the popular Windows 3.1 windowing
environment. PIKES includes both stereo and monoscopic viewing of the
original source imagery and photo-interpretation keys. An ancillary
package is included with PIKES for the co-registration of the stereo
image pairs. PIKES can ingest a variety of monoscopic and stereoscopic
imagery. Supported imagery source types include airphotos, Landsat and
imagery from the SPOT earth observation satellite.

what do I do with it?
In order to use this demonstration software, it must be installed for use
under Windows 3.1. The software required that Windows be running in enhanced
mode. The screen display mode should be at least 800 by 600, as a number of
the dialogs are greater than 640 pixels wide. 16 colour mode is sufficient
for this demo. (The development software required at least 256 colours.)
The un-installed files occupy about 800K bytes, and the installed files
require about 2.8M bytes of disk space. After installation the 'un-installed'
files may be deleted.
how do I install the software?
You probably received this software in a zip file, and have already
un-zipped it! (How else could you be reading this?), anyway...
1. unzip distribution zip file to a temporary directory/disk with at
least 800K bytes free.
2. make sure that you have an additional 2.8M bytes free on your hard
drive.
3. start Windows 3.1 in enhanced mode, if you have not already done so.
4. from the Program Manager menu select "File | Run".
5. enter the install directory/disk used in 1. above, and append "install"
to that directory name/disk.
6. the default installation directory is "C:\PIKES". If you are going to
use a different installation directory, enter it now, otherwise
simply press enter.
7. the installation utility will create the directory if needed, install
the files into it, and create a Program Manager group entitled
"PIKES" with 3 items: "Interpreter's Assistant", "readme", and "demo".
8. you should delete the 'un-installed' files created in 1. above.
9. browse the "demo" document before proceeeding.
10. run the application. double-click the "Interpreter's Assistant" icon.
